Barons Undress Knights in Game 2 to Even Series

South Amboy, NJ – Disgusted and at the same time energized by their poor play in game 1, the Jersey Barons came out firing in game 2. The first four hitters in the top of the first all reached base and scored, capped off by a long home run by newcomer C Matt Eggert. CF Tom Greene lead off with a walk, stole second, and was then coupled on the bags with another walk to 3B Pat Santorsola. 2B Chris Fucci then ripped a single to plate Greene, setting the table for Eggert’s first homer of the season (and the game!).

The Union Knights countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st, on back-to-back singles by DH Eli Siebert and SS Jaime Santacruz. But tri-ace Matt Woehnker would settle down and strike out the next two Knights and induce the hot-hitting Steve Berson to fly out to Greene. Woehnker was masterful after that, pitching four complete scoreless innings to record the complete game victory. Wenky punched out six strikeouts, with three in the 4th, and did not walk a batter in his strong performance.

The Barons would get the Knights’ run right back in the 2nd, regaining their four-run lead by a score of 5-1. The score would remain the same until the top of the 5th, where the Barons would explode for a crooked number thanks to two 3-run home runs. The first came off the bat of Matt Eggert, a long, no-doubter to deep left field. This was Eggert’s second 3-run homer, giving him 6 RBI on the game, and 8 RBI in his season debut. The second home run of the inning came off RF Chris Jeffray’s stick, another shot to left field and Jeffray’s first tater as a Baron. The sudden burst of runs was a welcome change of pace for the Baron offense, and more than enough for their crafty starter to seal the deal with another scoreless inning in the bottom frame to end the game early.

With big hits and strong pitching, game 2 was soundly won by the boys in navy blue. The Barons also played flawless defense with no errors, a far cry from their display in game 1. It truly was a tale of two teams today in South Amboy, and the Barons plan on taking their showing in game 2 for the rest of the 2008 campaign.
