The Jersey Barons are earning some fame in the land of the stars.
Fresh off their solid 2006 Season which saw them go deep into the Spring playoffs before winning it all in the Fall, the Barons have been continuing their dominance on the field for years. Now they have made their way onto the silver screen.
Over the years the Barons have had many an "actor" on the team, and this year's roster was no different. After a casting call by Howard Libov, who has been a director, writer and producer for a few "indie" films, four Barons' players participated in a screen test for extras in Libov's upcoming baseball/life film "Favorite Son". Two Barons, Manager/2B Phil Barone and 1B/P Darren DeLuca, were selected along with 9 others out of several hundred aspiring actors. The duo will get to don the spikes in the film with castmembers Pablo Schreiber, Connor Paolo, Kellie Overbey and Richard Bekins.
The best news is yet to come: One week after the screen tests, Barone received a call from Libov in reference to the "hero" team in the movie (the good guys). Mr. Libov saw the Jersey Barons' classic blue and grey jersey on tape and exclaimed "That's our hero team!"
An agreement was reached between the film crew and Barone - the "hero" team in the film would be the Barons, and the actual Barons uniforms would be used on the screen.
Working closely with the Production, Props and Costume crews, the Barons have helped position themselves for some national acclaim. There is also some hope of a "westward movement" with a possible Barons West Coast team.
"Favorite Son" is due for release in 2007, with more details to follow. Stay tuned for the next Barons collaborative project with actor/director Mel Gibson...
